  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon black food coloring gel
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract and vinegar.
  4. Gradually add the dry mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, alternating between them. Mix in black food coloring until desired darkness is achieved.
  5. Fill cupcake liners two-thirds full with batter and bake for 18–20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely on wire racks.
  6. For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth; gradually add powdered sugar along with vanilla extract and salt until fluffy.
  7. Frost cooled cupcakes generously and decorate as desired.
